we smile at each other
from behind our ears
Like some gifted child
he is earnest, easygoing, bookish
no shoegazing, no bullshit
only wholehearted openness
to a world of wonder-seeking
and ill-will

He has an American wife
she is from Maine
He says the mosquitoes there are monsters
they come at you at all cost
They met here in England, in school
I bet they were two blossoming flowers
when they met
